This series has one purpose: to turn each heart to Him, to Christ, full of love, joy, forgiveness and mercy.

G. B. MerkleyFirst, a noteA note from G. B. MerkleyRead the whole noteClose the note

Full disclosure: I had a small part in this. I don’t claim to be a genius, or an author. What am I? Someone with a will and a drive to create. Never good enough to write every word or place every comma, but able to create, organize, build and produce. That is what I did here.

I have spent months and months on this series because of what the Book of Mormon has given me. I did not make it to convert any man, woman or child to any church. I am obsessed with truth.

As a boy of twelve I pored over its pages, and I saw patterns: the foundations of true principles, values, morals and eternal truths. There is an opposition in all things. Wickedness never was happiness. Men are, that they might have joy. And on and on. What happens when people hold grudges and won’t forgive. How lies spread. How men seek power. How riches can corrupt the mind and the heart. How pride gets in the way, until families separate and nations crumble. How everyone should work for the bread they eat. How, before we seek riches, we should seek goodness, light and love, and if we seek riches after that, seek them not for glory, power, dominion or pride, but to serve and to do lasting good for others.

With all of this, I knelt down to know for myself, from God Himself, whether the book was real: whether it held the writings of a real people, and of God. Through a feeling of warmth and light, He impressed on my young, innocent mind that it was true.

That single moment became my foundation in truth. It shaped my desire not to let my own thoughts, my short-sighted feelings or ambitions, bring harm to myself, my family, my neighbors or my community. It bound me to my Savior: loving Him, believing in Him, wanting to be better for Him.

I have come to see that none of us will ever be perfect. What is perfect? Become as a little child: submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love. God can work with a little child, but not with a stubborn, prideful adult. As adults we fool ourselves that we are grown up, knowledgeable and wise. But aren’t we all little children, really? The sooner we see our place before whoever, or whatever, created us and this life for us, the better.

I wanted to publish this series anonymously, so that no one would give me credit. I don’t deserve it, and I don’t want it. I wasn’t secret enough while I made it, and I regret that. I want no praise and no reward. I only want people to carry the principles, truths, love and wisdom in these pages into their lives, their homes, their families, their cities and their countries, so that evil can stop.

I wish all men were like Captain Moroni, so that the devil could be shut out forever: if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever. The devil, the evil, is in each of us, for the natural man is an enemy to God… and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit.

If you can’t come to believe in Jesus Christ, then come to believe in the things He taught. Let them sit in your heart and lead what you do, and see whether they are a good seed that brings good fruit.

— G. B. Merkley

The verses in this note
  • 2 Nephi 2:1111 For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my firstborn in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.
  • Alma 41:1010 Do not suppose, because it has been spoken concerning restoration, that ye shall be restored from sin to happiness. Behold, I say unto you, wickedness never was happiness.
  • 2 Nephi 2:2525 Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.
  • Jacob 2:18–1918 But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom of God. 19 And after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good—to clothe the naked, and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the captive, and administer relief to the sick and the afflicted.
  • Mosiah 3:1919 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.
  • Alma 48:1717 Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.
  • Alma 32:2828 Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.

What did it cost them to not follow Him?

The peoples of the record, in their own words: what turning from Him cost them.

The record’s own wars

When they turned from Him

“O ye fair ones, how could ye have departed from the ways of the Lord! O ye fair ones, how could ye have rejected that Jesus, who stood with open arms to receive you!”
— Mormon, over his people at Cumorah

Mormon looked out over the dead and asked why. From its first pages to its last, the record gives the same answer: when a people turned from Him, it cost them everything.

Mormon wrote of his own day: “the whole face of this land is one continual round of murder and bloodshed; and no one knoweth the end of the war.” In 2025 there were 65 armed conflicts between states and armed groups, in 35 countries, the most since records began in 1946.

“…ore I have none, for I am alone… I have not friends nor whither to go…”

Moroni finished his father’s record by himself, hiding for his life, with no metal left to make more plates. He buried it about AD 421.

And behold, I would write it also if I had room upon the plates, but I have not; and ore I have none, for I am alone. • Moroni 10:1–21 Now I, Moroni, write somewhat as seemeth me good; and I write unto my brethren, the Lamanites; and I would that they should know that more than four hundred and twenty years have passed away since the sign was given of the coming of Christ. 2 And I seal up these records, after I have spoken a few words by way of exhortation unto you.

keepers

People the record names who kept the plates and handed them on, most often father to son, from Nephi to Moroni.

Who they were
  1. Nephi Son of Lehi. Commanded to make the plates, he made them and began the record.
2 Nephi 5:30–3130 And it came to pass that the Lord God said unto me: Make other plates; and thou shalt engraven many things upon them which are good in my sight, for the profit of thy people. 31 Wherefore, I, Nephi, to be obedient to the commandments of the Lord, went and made these plates upon which I have engraven these things.
Jacob 1:1–21 For behold, it came to pass that fifty and five years had passed away from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem; wherefore, Nephi gave me, Jacob, a commandment concerning the small plates, upon which these things are engraven. 2 And he gave me, Jacob, a commandment that I should write upon these plates a few of the things which I considered to be most precious; that I should not touch, save it were lightly, concerning the history of this people which are called the people of Nephi.
  2. Jacob Nephi’s younger brother, born in the wilderness. Given the small plates and told to write what was most precious.
1 Nephi 18:77 And now, my father had begat two sons in the wilderness; the elder was called Jacob and the younger Joseph.
  3. Enos Jacob’s son. He prayed all day, and when night came he was still praying.
Jacob 7:2727 And I, Jacob, saw that I must soon go down to my grave; wherefore, I said unto my son Enos: Take these plates. And I told him the things which my brother Nephi had commanded me, and he promised obedience unto the commands. And I make an end of my writing upon these plates, which writing has been small; and to the reader I bid farewell, hoping that many of my brethren may read my words. Brethren, adieu.
Enos 1:44 And my soul hungered; and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer and supplication for mine own soul; and all the day long did I cry unto him; yea, and when the night came I did still raise my voice high that it reached the heavens.
  4. Jarom Son of Enos. He wrote “that our genealogy may be kept.”
Jarom 1:11 Now behold, I, Jarom, write a few words according to the commandment of my father, Enos, that our genealogy may be kept.
Jarom 1:1515 And I deliver these plates into the hands of my son Omni, that they may be kept according to the commandments of my fathers.
  5. Omni Son of Jarom. He fought much with the sword to protect his people, and called himself a wicked man.
Omni 1:1–31 Behold, it came to pass that I, Omni, being commanded by my father, Jarom, that I should write somewhat upon these plates, to preserve our genealogy— 2 Wherefore, in my days, I would that ye should know that I fought much with the sword to preserve my people, the Nephites, from falling into the hands of their enemies, the Lamanites. But behold, I of myself am a wicked man, and I have not kept the statutes and the commandments of the Lord as I ought to have done. 3 And it came to pass that two hundred and seventy and six years had passed away, and we had many seasons of peace; and we had many seasons of serious war and bloodshed. Yea, and in fine, two hundred and eighty and two years had passed away, and I had kept these plates according to the commandments of my fathers; and I conferred them upon my son Amaron. And I make an end.
  6. Amaron Son of Omni.
Omni 1:3–43 And it came to pass that two hundred and seventy and six years had passed away, and we had many seasons of peace; and we had many seasons of serious war and bloodshed. Yea, and in fine, two hundred and eighty and two years had passed away, and I had kept these plates according to the commandments of my fathers; and I conferred them upon my son Amaron. And I make an end. 4 And now I, Amaron, write the things whatsoever I write, which are few, in the book of my father.
Omni 1:88 And it came to pass that I did deliver the plates unto my brother Chemish.
  7. Chemish Amaron’s brother. He saw his brother write his last words the day he handed the plates over.
Omni 1:99 Now I, Chemish, write what few things I write, in the same book with my brother; for behold, I saw the last which he wrote, that he wrote it with his own hand; and he wrote it in the day that he delivered them unto me. And after this manner we keep the records, for it is according to the commandments of our fathers. And I make an end.
  8. Abinadom Son of Chemish. He saw “much war and contention” and defended his people with his own sword.
Omni 1:1010 Behold, I, Abinadom, am the son of Chemish. Behold, it came to pass that I saw much war and contention between my people, the Nephites, and the Lamanites; and I, with my own sword, have taken the lives of many of the Lamanites in the defence of my brethren.
  9. Amaleki Son of Abinadom. Old, with no children, he gave the full plates to King Benjamin, “a just man before the Lord.”
Omni 1:1212 Behold, I am Amaleki, the son of Abinadom. Behold, I will speak unto you somewhat concerning Mosiah, who was made king over the land of Zarahemla; for behold, he being warned of the Lord that he should flee out of the land of Nephi, and as many as would hearken unto the voice of the Lord should also depart out of the land with him, into the wilderness—
Omni 1:2525 And it came to pass that I began to be old; and, having no seed, and knowing king Benjamin to be a just man before the Lord, wherefore, I shall deliver up these plates unto him, exhorting all men to come unto God, the Holy One of Israel, and believe in prophesying, and in revelations, and in the ministering of angels, and in the gift of speaking with tongues, and in the gift of interpreting languages, and in all things which are good; for there is nothing which is good save it comes from the Lord: and that which is evil cometh from the devil.
Omni 1:3030 And I, Amaleki, had a brother, who also went with them; and I have not since known concerning them. And I am about to lie down in my grave; and these plates are full. And I make an end of my speaking.
  10. King Benjamin The king of Zarahemla. He put the small plates with the records the kings had kept.
Words of Mormon 1:1010 Wherefore, it came to pass that after Amaleki had delivered up these plates into the hands of king Benjamin, he took them and put them with the other plates, which contained records which had been handed down by the kings, from generation to generation until the days of king Benjamin.
Mosiah 1:1616 And moreover, he also gave him charge concerning the records which were engraven on the plates of brass; and also the plates of Nephi; and also, the sword of Laban, and the ball or director, which led our fathers through the wilderness, which was prepared by the hand of the Lord that thereby they might be led, every one according to the heed and diligence which they gave unto him.
  11. King Mosiah Benjamin’s son. He translated the Jaredite record, then gave every record to Alma.
    Mosiah 28:1111 Therefore he took the records which were engraven on the plates of brass, and also the plates of Nephi, and all the things which he had kept and preserved according to the commandments of God, after having translated and caused to be written the records which were on the plates of gold which had been found by the people of Limhi, which were delivered to him by the hand of Limhi;
Mosiah 28:2020 And now, as I said unto you, that after king Mosiah had done these things, he took the plates of brass, and all the things which he had kept, and conferred them upon Alma, who was the son of Alma; yea, all the records, and also the interpreters, and conferred them upon him, and commanded him that he should keep and preserve them, and also keep a record of the people, handing them down from one generation to another, even as they had been handed down from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem.
  12. Alma Son of Alma. Once he tried to destroy the church; he became its high priest and the first chief judge.
Mosiah 27:8–108 Now the sons of Mosiah were numbered among the unbelievers; and also one of the sons of Alma was numbered among them, he being called Alma, after his father; nevertheless, he became a very wicked and an idolatrous man. And he was a man of many words, and did speak much flattery to the people; therefore he led many of the people to do after the manner of his iniquities. 9 And he became a great hinderment to the prosperity of the church of God; stealing away the hearts of the people; causing much dissension among the people; giving a chance for the enemy of God to exercise his power over them. 10 And now it came to pass that while he was going about to destroy the church of God, for he did go about secretly with the sons of Mosiah seeking to destroy the church, and to lead astray the people of the Lord, contrary to the commandments of God, or even the king—
Mosiah 29:4242 And it came to pass that Alma was appointed to be the first chief judge, he being also the high priest, his father having conferred the office upon him, and having given him the charge concerning all the affairs of the church.
  13. Helaman Alma’s son. He marched at the head of two thousand young soldiers.
    Alma 37:11 And now, my son Helaman, I command you that ye take the records which have been entrusted with me;
Alma 53:2222 And now it came to pass that Helaman did march at the head of his two thousand stripling soldiers, to the support of the people in the borders of the land on the south by the west sea.
  14. Shiblon Helaman’s brother.
Alma 63:11 And it came to pass in the commencement of the thirty and sixth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, that Shiblon took possession of those sacred things which had been delivered unto Helaman by Alma.
  15. Helaman Son of Helaman, named for his father. Chosen by the people as chief judge.
Alma 63:1111 Therefore it became expedient for Shiblon to confer those sacred things, before his death, upon the son of Helaman, who was called Helaman, being called after the name of his father.
Helaman 2:22 And it came to pass that Helaman, who was the son of Helaman, was appointed to fill the judgment-seat, by the voice of the people.
  16. Nephi Son of Helaman. Chief judge, until he gave up the judgment-seat to preach.
Helaman 3:3737 And it came to pass in the fifty and third year of the reign of the judges, Helaman died, and his eldest son Nephi began to reign in his stead. And it came to pass that he did fill the judgment-seat with justice and equity; yea, he did keep the commandments of God, and did walk in the ways of his father.
Helaman 5:11 And it came to pass that in this same year, behold, Nephi delivered up the judgment-seat to a man whose name was Cezoram.
  17. Nephi His eldest son, one of the twelve disciples Jesus chose when He came. 3 Nephi is his book.
3 Nephi 1:22 And Nephi, the son of Helaman, had departed out of the land of Zarahemla, giving charge unto his son Nephi, who was his eldest son, concerning the plates of brass, and all the records which had been kept, and all those things which had been kept sacred from the departure of Lehi out of Jerusalem.
3 Nephi 19:44 And it came to pass that on the morrow, when the multitude was gathered together, behold, Nephi and his brother whom he had raised from the dead, whose name was Timothy, and also his son, whose name was Jonas, and also Mathoni, and Mathonihah, his brother, and Kumen, and Kumenonhi, and Jeremiah, and Shemnon, and Jonas, and Zedekiah, and Isaiah—now these were the names of the disciples whom Jesus had chosen—and it came to pass that they went forth and stood in the midst of the multitude.
  18. Nephi Son of the disciple Nephi. He kept the record through the years of peace after Christ came; 4 Nephi is his book.
4 Nephi 1:1919 And it came to pass that Nephi, he that kept this last record, (and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi) died, and his son Amos kept it in his stead; and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi also.
  19. Amos Son of Nephi.
4 Nephi 1:1919 And it came to pass that Nephi, he that kept this last record, (and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi) died, and his son Amos kept it in his stead; and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi also.
  20. Amos Son of Amos.
4 Nephi 1:2121 And it came to pass that Amos died also, (and it was an hundred and ninety and four years from the coming of Christ) and his son Amos kept the record in his stead; and he also kept it upon the plates of Nephi; and it was also written in the book of Nephi, which is this book.
  21. Ammaron Brother of Amos. He hid the records, then told a sober boy of about ten, Mormon, where to find them.
4 Nephi 1:47–4847 And it came to pass that after three hundred and five years had passed away, (and the people did still remain in wickedness) Amos died; and his brother, Ammaron, did keep the record in his stead. 48 And it came to pass that when three hundred and twenty years had passed away, Ammaron, being constrained by the Holy Ghost, did hide up the records which were sacred—yea, even all the sacred records which had been handed down from generation to generation, which were sacred—even until the three hundred and twentieth year from the coming of Christ.
Mormon 1:2–32 And about the time that Ammaron hid up the records unto the Lord, he came unto me, (I being about ten years of age, and I began to be learned somewhat after the manner of the learning of my people) and Ammaron said unto me: I perceive that thou art a sober child, and art quick to observe; 3 Therefore, when ye are about twenty and four years old I would that ye should remember the things that ye have observed concerning this people; and when ye are of that age go to the land Antum, unto a hill which shall be called Shim; and there have I deposited unto the Lord all the sacred engravings concerning this people.
  22. Mormon He led the Nephite armies from the age of sixteen, abridged the record, and before the last battle gave the plates to his son.
Mormon 2:1–21 And it came to pass in that same year there began to be a war again between the Nephites and the Lamanites. And notwithstanding I being young, was large in stature; therefore the people of Nephi appointed me that I should be their leader, or the leader of their armies. 2 Therefore it came to pass that in my sixteenth year I did go forth at the head of an army of the Nephites, against the Lamanites; therefore three hundred and twenty and six years had passed away.
Words of Mormon 1:33 And now, I speak somewhat concerning that which I have written; for after I had made an abridgment from the plates of Nephi, down to the reign of this king Benjamin, of whom Amaleki spake, I searched among the records which had been delivered into my hands, and I found these plates, which contained this small account of the prophets, from Jacob down to the reign of this king Benjamin, and also many of the words of Nephi.
Mormon 6:66 And it came to pass that when we had gathered in all our people in one to the land of Cumorah, behold I, Mormon, began to be old; and knowing it to be the last struggle of my people, and having been commanded of the Lord that I should not suffer the records which had been handed down by our fathers, which were sacred, to fall into the hands of the Lamanites, (for the Lamanites would destroy them) therefore I made this record out of the plates of Nephi, and hid up in the hill Cumorah all the records which had been entrusted to me by the hand of the Lord, save it were these few plates which I gave unto my son Moroni.
  23. Moroni Mormon’s son. He finished the record alone and hid it in the earth.
Mormon 8:1–41 Behold I, Moroni, do finish the record of my father, Mormon. Behold, I have but few things to write, which things I have been commanded by my father. 2 And now it came to pass that after the great and tremendous battle at Cumorah, behold, the Nephites who had escaped into the country southward were hunted by the Lamanites, until they were all destroyed. 3 And my father also was killed by them, and I even remain alone to write the sad tale of the destruction of my people. But behold, they are gone, and I fulfil the commandment of my father. And whether they will slay me, I know not. 4 Therefore I will write and hide up the records in the earth; and whither I go it mattereth not.
Moroni 10:1–21 Now I, Moroni, write somewhat as seemeth me good; and I write unto my brethren, the Lamanites; and I would that they should know that more than four hundred and twenty years have passed away since the sign was given of the coming of Christ. 2 And I seal up these records, after I have spoken a few words by way of exhortation unto you.

Before King Benjamin, kings kept the larger plates “from generation to generation”, unnamed (Words of Mormon 1:10). And Ether, the last prophet of the Jaredites, finished and hid their record, which Moroni later abridged (Ether 15:33).

At least seven people wrote for him. About 28% of the original manuscript survives.

“These were days never to be forgotten—to sit under the sound of a voice dictated by the inspiration of heaven, awakened the utmost gratitude of this bosom! Day after day I continued, uninterrupted, to write from his mouth…”

NHM
Nahom, without its vowels

The record says Ishmael “died, and was buried in the place which was called Nahom.” Hebrew was written mostly without vowels, and the old script of southern Arabia without any. On altars from about the 7th century BC, dug up at a temple in Marib, Yemen, a donor is named “the Nihmite”: NHM. Large ancient burial grounds lie in that region. Nothing marks Ishmael’s grave.

“In the Book of Mormon so much is matter of fact: this is what happened, this is why. But what about the human reality in between, the real stories, the lives lived? I hadn’t fully grasped the Book of Mormon until I read it as historical fiction and came to know the writers and the people. Now I can say the whole name, not just NHM.”— G. B. Merkley

A child pays
far more than being poor

Studies that follow children whose parents split up, or who grew up without their father, find much more than poverty. These are links, not proof of cause: money and other troubles explain part of each gap. The most careful studies find the harm smaller than these numbers, but real, above all for finishing school, behavior, and mental health as adults.

Abortion: the facts

About 66 million
abortions in the US since 1973

Whatever you believe about it, these are the counts. This adds up Guttmacher’s yearly national estimates, 1973 to 2025; no national count was published for 2021 or 2022, so those two years are estimated. In 2025 there were 1,128,200, about 3,100 a day. Self-managed abortions aren’t counted.

About 35 million
their children and grandchildren, by 2026

This is math, not a count. It assumes each had been born in the year of the abortion; that the girls among them had children at the same rates as other American women of their age, year by year since; 1,045 boys born for every 1,000 girls; and that they lived as long as Americans do now. With them, about 99 million more people would be alive today. Not every abortion means one fewer birth (some would have been born later, and some pregnancies end on their own), so read this as the upper edge.

By state, the most were in California (184,620 in 2025), then New York, Illinois, Florida and New Jersey. Since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision (2022), more people cross state lines, and pills are mailed into states that ban it (91,110 in 2025). By race (2022, the 32 areas that report it), two different numbers: the share of all abortions, and the rate, how many for every 1,000 women of that group. The CDC says race and ethnicity “are markers not drivers” of these differences.

Veterans’ care, a later cost of war, adds about $2,700 a household more. Not all of it is the cost of sin: an army also keeps the peace, and border agents also collect customs.

IV

What will it cost us?

If nothing changes, all of it comes again next year. The record shows another way.

A warning

This land

“…whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ…”
— Moroni, Ether 2:12

The record calls the Americas a land of promise, and it says the promise has a condition. Moroni wrote it down for the people who would live here after him: “this cometh unto you, O ye Gentiles, that ye may know the decrees of God—that ye may repent.”

Sources
  • Ether 2:11–1211 And this cometh unto you, O ye Gentiles, that ye may know the decrees of God—that ye may repent, and not continue in your iniquities until the fulness come, that ye may not bring down the fulness of the wrath of God upon you as the inhabitants of the land have hitherto done. 12 Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ, who hath been manifested by the things which we have written.
  • Ether 13:22 For behold, they rejected all the words of Ether; for he truly told them of all things, from the beginning of man; and that after the waters had receded from off the face of this land it became a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should serve him who dwell upon the face thereof;
“…he that doth possess it shall serve God or shall be swept off; for it is the everlasting decree of God.”
— Ether 2:10

It happened twice in the record. The Jaredites were swept off, and then the Nephites, both times “when they are ripened in iniquity.” Lehi gave the same warning: “if iniquity shall abound cursed shall be the land for their sakes, but unto the righteous it shall be blessed forever.”

Sources
  • Ether 2:8–98 And he had sworn in his wrath unto the brother of Jared, that whoso should possess this land of promise, from that time henceforth and forever, should serve him, the true and only God, or they should be swept off when the fulness of his wrath should come upon them. 9 And now, we can behold the decrees of God concerning this land, that it is a land of promise; and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall serve God, or they shall be swept off when the fulness of his wrath shall come upon them. And the fulness of his wrath cometh upon them when they are ripened in iniquity.
  • 2 Nephi 1:77 Wherefore, this land is consecrated unto him whom he shall bring. And if it so be that they shall serve him according to the commandments which he hath given, it shall be a land of liberty unto them; wherefore, they shall never be brought down into captivity; if so, it shall be because of iniquity; for if iniquity shall abound cursed shall be the land for their sakes, but unto the righteous it shall be blessed forever.
  • 2 Nephi 1:10–1110 But behold, when the time cometh that they shall dwindle in unbelief, after they have received so great blessings from the hand of the Lord—having a knowledge of the creation of the earth, and all men, knowing the great and marvelous works of the Lord from the creation of the world; having power given them to do all things by faith; having all the commandments from the beginning, and having been brought by his infinite goodness into this precious land of promise—behold, I say, if the day shall come that they will reject the Holy One of Israel, the true Messiah, their Redeemer and their God, behold, the judgments of him that is just shall rest upon them. 11 Yea, he will bring other nations unto them, and he will give unto them power, and he will take away from them the lands of their possessions, and he will cause them to be scattered and smitten.
  • Alma 45:1616 And he said: Thus saith the Lord God—Cursed shall be the land, yea, this land, unto every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, unto destruction, which do wickedly, when they are fully ripe; and as I have said so shall it be; for this is the cursing and the blessing of God upon the land, for the Lord cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance.
“…I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end…”
— Amulek, Alma 34:33

A nation doesn’t turn all at once. It turns one person at a time.

“We can’t put this off. The only way to do it is one person at a time: make the promise, keep it, renew it, live it.”— G. B. Merkley

  • Alma 34:32–3332 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors. 33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.

The record

It doesn’t have to cost this

“…there was no contention in the land, because of the love of God which did dwell in the hearts of the people.”
— 4 Nephi

After Christ came, the record says, for more than 150 years there were no robbers and no murderers, no rich and no poor, “nor any manner of -ites; but they were in one, the children of Christ.” It lasted until pride came back.

“Jesus Christ has the power to greatly reduce, and to end, all of this burden: the burden of sin, of wickedness, of the lack of love, and of seeking power and dominion.”— G. B. Merkley

Not everyone has the stamina, the attention span or the patience to read the Book of Mormon. Many more will read HIS Gathered, and even more will watch a TV series. More people will sit and listen, and connect with its stories. If mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, mayors and governors, members of Congress and senators, presidents, leaders and pastors take those stories to heart, choose to follow Him, and bury their weapons of war, we can be a blessed people.

  • Alma 24:17–1917 And now it came to pass that when the king had made an end of these sayings, and all the people were assembled together, they took their swords, and all the weapons which were used for the shedding of man’s blood, and they did bury them up deep in the earth. 18 And this they did, it being in their view a testimony to God, and also to men, that they never would use weapons again for the shedding of man’s blood; and this they did, vouching and covenanting with God, that rather than shed the blood of their brethren they would give up their own lives; and rather than take away from a brother they would give unto him; and rather than spend their days in idleness they would labor abundantly with their hands. 19 And thus we see that, when these Lamanites were brought to believe and to know the truth, they were firm, and would suffer even unto death rather than commit sin; and thus we see that they buried their weapons of peace, or they buried the weapons of war, for peace.

Today

And now

A movement
bigger than a book series

HIS Gathered is bigger than a book series. It is a movement to gather in all who believe on His name and are willing to make a promise, keep that promise, renew it, and change the world.

— G. B. Merkley

HIS Gathered …
the name is unfinished on purpose

HIS Gathered what? Sheep? People? Children? It is too big to finish: sons, daughters, children, babies, parents, grandparents, leaders, addicts, prisoners, politicians, pastors, clergy, and on and on, until every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is the Christ.

— G. B. Merkley

Yea, even at the last day, when all men shall stand to be judged of him, then shall they confess that he is God; then shall they confess, who live without God in the world, that the judgment of an everlasting punishment is just upon them; and they shall quake, and tremble, and shrink beneath the glance of his all-searching eye.
You

First or last, it doesn’t matter. In His parable, the laborers who came at the eleventh hour received the same as those who had “borne the burden and heat of the day.” Whenever you come, carry it to someone who has never read it.

  • Matthew 20:6–9, 12, 166 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? 7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. 8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. 9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

A promise to follow Jesus Christ

I believe in Jesus Christ, who walked the streets of Jerusalem, who suffered in the garden for every pain and every sin, who gave His life on the cross and rose again the third day. I want to follow Him, and be counted among His.
